Context

BOO is an international short film festival created by merging ELBE DOCK and Young Film Fest. It focuses on film education and audience development, with a programme in Prague cinemas for young filmmakers, families and schools, and film professionals. The festival held a competition for its visual identity, and this is my entry.

Challenge

A festival for both children and professionals can easily end up with an identity that speaks to no one. It wasn’t about drawing a spooky logo to match the name BOO. The task was to create a character you can talk to, whether you’re a child, a film student or an industry professional.

Concept

The logotype is built on roundness. The BOO shape is both a ghost and a speech bubble, a nod to the dialogue and exchange of ideas that belong to the festival. The symbol has a built-in mascot that appears in different moods: with a monocle, asleep, screaming or surprised.

The bubble works as a space for taglines such as “neBOOdeš litovat!” (a pun on “you won’t regret it”) or “Not a scary festival. Just scarily good.” The system is completed by contrasting colours – purple, yellow and pink –, the Rooney Sans typeface, arrows and stickers for programme news.

Deliverables

I developed the concept into posters, social media posts, outdoor advertising and T-shirts, and prepared a set of animated GIFs. Coloured profile picture frames let the festival communicate what’s happening right now, for example during the festival or at special events.

Outcome

In the end, another entry won the competition. I’m showing the concept here because it shows well how I build a brand with a personality: BOO is curious, open and a little cheeky, just like the short films it loves.
